چکیده

Electrical field-induced strain response of electron-irradiated Poly(viny1idene fluoride trifluoroethylene) copolymer has been studied by a Mach-Zehnder type Heterodyne interferometer in the frequency range of 3 to 9 kHz. The electrostrictive constant is calculated from the strain results, which is of the same order of magnitude as those obtained at 1 Hz by a bimorph-based strain sensor, but at much lower electrical field. Changes in the piezoelectric coefficient, dielectric property and phase transition behavior of the same copolymer have been studied. The structural changes in the irradiated films were probed by means of differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and IR spectra. The reversible solid-state transition between the polar and non-polar phase in the crystalline regions of the copolymer dnven by the external electric field is suggested to be responsible for the significant high electrostrictive strain of the electron-irradiated copolymer.

Electrostrictive poly(vinylidene ̄uoride-tri ̄uoroethylene) copolymers

High energy electron (1.0±2.55 MeV) irradiation was used to modify the phase transitional behavior of poly(vinylidene ̄uoridetri ̄uoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymers in an attempt to signi®cantly improve the electromechanical properties of the copolymers. It is found that the copolymers under a proper irradiation treatment exhibit very little room temperature polarization hysteresis and very ...

Advanced Ferroelectric and Related Electromechanical Polymers

This talk will cover two classes of electroactive polymers under development recent at Penn State. One is the modified poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) polymer and the other is the high dielectric constant all-organic composite. Recently, making use of the defect structure modification in P(VDF-TrFE) based polymers, we converted normal ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) into rel...

The negative piezoelectric effect of the ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride).

Piezoelectricity describes interconversion between electrical charge and mechanical strain. As expected for lattice ions displaced in an electric field, the proportionality constant is positive for all piezoelectric materials. The exceptions are poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers with trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)), which exhibit a negative longitudinal piezoelectric coefficie...

Multimaterial Fiber Microelectromechanical Systems Based on Electrostrictive P(vdf-trfe-cfe) Multimaterial Fiber Microelectromechanical Systems Based on Electrostrictive P(vdf-trfe-cfe)

The miniaturization of electromechanical transducers using bulk and surface micromachining processes has enabled the deployment of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in a variety of applications, from cell phones and ink-jet printers to drug delivery devices. A recently developed approach for the fabrication of multimaterial fiber devices presents a unique opportunity to realize MEMS in a no...

Oriented polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) films by Langmuir-Blodgett deposition: a synchrotron X-ray diffraction study.

Langmuir-Blodgett films of polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene - P(VDF-TrFE)-copolymers possess substantially improved electrocaloric and pyroelectric properties, when compared with conventionally spin-cast films. In order to rationalize this, we prepared single-layered films of P(VDF-TrFE) (70 : 30) using both deposition techniques. Grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS),...
